Camera Resolution Guide: What You Really Get with 2MP, 5MP, and 8MP

When it comes to security cameras, resolution matters. But with so many numbers floating around—2MP, 5MP, 8MP—how do you know which one’s right for you? Let’s break it down without the tech jargon.

What Is Megapixel (MP)?

Megapixel refers to one million pixels. The higher the MP, the clearer and more detailed your image will be. More pixels = sharper footage.

  • 2MP (1080p): High Definition (HD)
  • 4MP: 2K
  • 5MP: Super HD or Enhanced 2K
  • 8MP (4K): Ultra HD

Pros & Cons of Each Resolution

2MP (1080p HD)

  • ✅ Budget-friendly
  • ✅ Good for general monitoring
  • ❌ Limited clarity when zooming in

4MP (2K)

  • ✅ Sharper image than 2MP
  • ✅ Wider field of view than 5MP in most cases
  • ❌ Slightly less vertical clarity than 5MP

5MP (Enhanced 2K)

  • ✅ Higher resolution with improved detail
  • ✅ Great balance between cost and clarity
  • ❌ May still blur license plates at a distance

8MP (4K)

  • ✅ Crystal-clear footage
  • ✅ Ideal for facial recognition and license plate reading
  • ❌ Requires more storage and a stronger internet connection
  • ❌ Higher Cost

See the Difference for Yourself

Wondering how much better 8MP really looks compared to 5MP? Watch side-by-side footage and get a real feel for what you’re paying for. Spoiler: license plates and facial details don’t lie.

What Is HD, 2K, and 4K?

When shopping for security cameras, you’ve probably come across terms like HD, 2K, and 4K—but what do they actually mean? Let’s break it down in plain English:

HD (High Definition) – 1080p (Also called 2MP)

  • Resolution: 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • This is your standard “high-definition” image.
  • Good for general monitoring around homes and small businesses.
  • Decent clarity but zooming in often leads to blurry details.
  • Best for: Basic setups and budget-friendly installs.

2K (Also called 4MP or 5MP)

  • Resolution: 2560 x 1440 (4MP) or 2560 x 1920 (5MP)
  • Offers about twice the detail of 1080p.
  • Faces and objects appear sharper, with more room to zoom in without losing clarity.
  • Best for: Medium-sized areas, retail stores, or anyone who wants better detail without going full 4K.

4K (Ultra HD or 8MP)

  • Resolution: 3840 x 2160 pixels
  • That’s four times the resolution of 1080p!
  • Excellent for capturing fine detail, facial recognition, and reading license plates.
  • Requires more storage and faster internet if streaming remotely.
  • Best for: Large properties, businesses with high traffic, or anyone who wants the clearest footage possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each level increases image clarity and detail.

  • 2MP (1080p) = standard HD
  • 4MP = better clarity, sharper images
  • 5MP = even sharper, with more vertical detail
  • 8MP (4K) = ultra-clear, ideal for license plates and faces

Not always. 2MP or 4MP might be enough depending on your needs. But if you want maximum clarity, zoom capability, and futureproofing, 4K is the way to go.

Yes — the higher the resolution, the more storage space is needed for recordings. But we help you size your hard drive properly so you don’t lose important footage.

In most cases, yes — but your NVR (recorder) must support all the resolutions you plan to use. We’ll help you configure it right to avoid compatibility issues.

Absolutely — especially if you want to zoom in and still see details clearly. It’s the difference between seeing someone and identifying who it is.
